In New York City, talent is spread across dozens of schools. The most gifted runners rarely get to train with athletes at their level. Our summer program fills that void.

Summer Group
Training Program
2026

Built around you. Train with others.

This program is for high school cross country athletes who want to arrive at their fall season stronger, healthier, and more prepared than they have ever been. Not because they trained harder. Because they trained smarter, and they were consistent.

Every athlete begins with a one-on-one session with Coach Kevin to review recent training history and set goals for the summer. From there, each athlete receives a week-by-week training outline built around their individual fitness and schedule. Summer training should be consistent and progressive, not rigid. The plan is designed with enough flexibility to work around heat waves, travel, and life, while still building real fitness over time.

Biweekly check-ins keep athletes accountable and allow Coach Kevin to monitor progress, adjust the plan, and make sure every athlete is developing in the right direction. Group sessions give athletes the chance to share the load, train alongside peers, and push each other in the way that only a training partner can.

Athletes can enroll for one month or the full summer. Spending part of the summer out of the city? Flexible and remote arrangements are available. Reach out.

Weekly Workouts

Tuesday

Central Park
Bridle Path

A 3–6 mile tempo run on the soft footing of the bridle path to minimize injury risk while exposing athletes to the hills in anticipation of the cross country season.

Tempo Run

Thursday

McCarren Park
Track, Brooklyn

Threshold cruise intervals to build aerobic capacity while using the controlled nature of the track to teach the body to recognize pace and effort.

Threshold Intervals

Each workout session includes:

  • Warm-up
  • Dynamic stretching
  • Workout tailored to individual needs
  • Cool-down
  • Core workout

Read the sport.
Understand it differently.

Every Sunday evening the group meets on Zoom for a discussion led by Coach Kevin. One book per month. For athletes, these conversations build the mental framework that separates good runners from great ones. For parents, it is a structured way for their athlete to build reading literacy, emotional intelligence, and perspective within a context they actually care about. These are not just running books. They are books about commitment, identity, and what it means to pursue something seriously.

June 15 – July 15

Running with the Buffaloes

Chris Lear

The gold standard of cross country literature. Lear spent the entire 1998 season embedded with the University of Colorado men’s XC team, in practices, in hotel rooms, on the starting line. What he captured is the rawest portrait of what it takes to compete at the highest level: the mileage, the sacrifice, the team dynamics, the grief of losing a teammate, Adam Goucher’s pursuit of the NCAA title. It reads like a novel. Essential for any serious cross country athlete. Written in 1999, some passages reflect an era the sport has since moved beyond, we will discuss those moments directly.

July 16 – August 16

Good for a Girl

Lauren Fleshman

Fleshman was a five-time NCAA All-American and one of the best American distance runners of her generation. This memoir traces her journey from driven young athlete to professional runner to one of the sport’s most important voices. She writes with honesty about the pressure female athletes face around performance, body image, and identity, and makes a compelling case for a sport that actually serves the people who run it. Where Buffaloes shows you the machine at full speed, Good for a Girl asks what the machine costs.

"Kevin coached my son for three months. He improved by more than two minutes and exceeded all of his preseason goals."

Why I built
this program.

New York City isn't an easy place for a high school cross country runner to train. We only have a few tracks in the city and very few running trails. Making matters worse, potential training partners are spread across a large number of small schools.

That's why I started the KWT Coaching Summer Training Program: to bring together talented and committed cross country runners for a summer of training that can fundamentally change the trajectory of their careers. The training sessions give athletes the opportunity to train with similarly talented peers, while the book club builds literacy and emotional intelligence within the sport, and the biweekly check-ins ensure accountability and access to coaching advice.

When I was in high school, I was among the best runners in the country. I qualified for the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships twice, anchored a winning Penn Relays DMR, and ran 3:50.53 for 1500. I went on to the University of Virginia, where I was part of three ACC Championship teams. I left college with a 4:02 mile PR. This program represents what worked, and more importantly what didn't work, in my high school career, as well as what I've seen lacking as a high school coach.

I began coaching high school cross country in 2023 at Franklin School in Jersey City, and in 2025 I joined the Loyola School in Manhattan. I've seen firsthand how difficult it is for talented athletes in this area to find the training environment they need, especially in the summer, when they are without the structure of practice and races. That gap is exactly what this program is designed to fill.

Consistency. Accountability. Self-reflection.

Our society talks about promoting these values, but rarely do we put them into practice. This summer training program is an opportunity to do just that, while building toward the best cross country season of your life.
